The Grand Finale

We visited the Groot Constantia winery near Cape Town and took a short tour of the facility which also included a wine-tasting session (otherwise we wouldn't have bothered). The wines were all very good, but the nicest ones are not available in Sweden at all. We all bought port at the shop except for Lasse who took some photos of squirrels outside. Then we drove to Backpackers to change clothes for a trip up Table Mountain. But Table Mountain was closed because it was too bloody windy. Just as well, so we went back to Backpackers and slept instead.   The gig at the Obz Café was not our best, but folks enjoyed it anyway and we got an encore. There were a few technical hick-ups in the beginning, like the guitar tuner not working and a bass-drum pedal that broke. But the concert picked up after a while and ended well. Dave Davies flew down from Jo'burg (!) and guested again in his inimitable fashion on some Radio Rats songs and will be doing that again this evening at the Tafelberg Tavern (or Speedway Café as it's also called). As always here in South Africa, the food was superb at the Obz Café. Good food and sitting in cars for two weeks has probably made us all noticably heavier than we were when we left Sweden.   There's a nice article about us in the Weekend Argus today with a big colour photo. So we're still famous, though in a very small way of course.   We took the cable car to the top of Table Mountain this morning and fortunately we only had to queue for one and a half hours. Luckily it was cold and misty on the mountain and we were favoured in that it only rained for a short while and we just had to queue for forty five minutes to get back down. Been there, done that and got the pressed coin! Right now it's late lunch/early dinner at The Fat Cactus just round the corner from Backpackers Inn. And then off to this evening's venue to meet up with The Hips, aka The Wedding Band from Hell, for a quick sound check. And here comes food….   At the Tafelberg Tavern, we ran into a couple of Gästrike locals: Leif Jansson, ex-pat from Sandviken and vacationing Janne Thunman from Gävle. "Do we have to come all the way to Cape Town to see Tuckers?" Apparently so.   Some wag has named the tour "HIP & TUCK". Pity that nobody thought of that earlier as it would have been a lovely epithet to hang the tour on.   It's the grand finale tonight. We've had a really good time touring with fellow rock bastards The Hip Replacements, Dave Davies and Jonathan Handley from the Radio Rats, eating excellent meals and meeting so many nice people. Herbie Parkin: a tremendous effort putting it all together and it's appreciated more than you know. Much love from the rest of Tuckers Lilla Kapell.   EXTRA EXTRA – no time to put the blog up last night so here's the last entry.   The gig at the Tafelberg Tavern was the best one we've done in South Africa and it was not a bar but a concert venue. The Hips were great, the sound was great and we were great. Dave Davies got practically the whole crowd up and dancing to ZX-Dan. Twice. It was a big, sweaty party with lots of swearing, drinking, laughing and dancing and it was hard to get away. But we made it in the end.   Phil & Lasse. Over and out.   Vi besökte de Groot Constantia vingård nära Cape Town och tog en kort rundtur i den anläggning som också innehöll en vinprovning session (annars skulle vi inte ha brytt). Vinerna var mycket bra, men det trevligaste av dessa är inte tillgängliga i Sverige alls. Vi köpte alla hamnen i butiken utom Lasse som tog några bilder av ekorrar utanför. Sen åkte vi till Backpackers att byta kläder för en tur upp Taffelberget. Men Taffelberget var stängt eftersom den var för blodig blåsigt. Lika bra, så vi gick tillbaka till Backpackers och sov istället. Spelningen på obz Café var inte vårt bästa, men folk hade det i alla fall och vi fick ett extranummer. Det fanns några tekniska hick-ups i början, like the guitar tuner inte fungerar och en bas-drum pedal som brast. Men konserten plockade upp efter ett tag och slutade väl. Dave Davies flög ner från Jo'burg (!) Och gästspelade igen i hans oefterhärmliga sätt om några Radio Rats låtar och kommer att göra det igen i kväll, på Tafelberg Tavern (eller speedway Café som det också kallas). Som alltid här i Sydafrika, maten var superb på obz Café. God mat och sitter i bilar i två veckor har troligen gjort oss alla noticably tyngre än vi var när vi lämnade Sverige. Det finns en trevlig artikel om oss i Weekend Argus idag med ett stort färgfoto. Så vi är fortfarande berömd, men i ett mycket litet sätt förstås. Vi tog linbanan till toppen av Taffelberget i morse och lyckligtvis vi bara var tvungna att köa för en och en halv timme. Lyckligtvis var kall och blåsig på berget och vi var gynnade av att det bara regnade en liten stund och vi bara var tvungna att köa för fyrtiofem minuter för att komma tillbaka. Been there, done that och fick pressas myntet! Just nu är det sen lunch / tidig middag på The Fat Cactus runt just hörnet från Backpackers Inn. Och sedan bort till kvällens plats för att möta upp med höfterna, alias The Wedding Band from Hell, för en snabb sound check. Och här kommer maten .... På Tafelberg Tavern, körde vi in ett par Gästrike locals: Leif Jansson, ex-pat från Sandviken och semestrande Janne Thunman från Gävle. "Måste vi kommit hela vägen till Kapstaden för att se Tuckers?" Tydligen så. Vissa vifta har namngett turnén "HIP & TUCK". Synd att ingen tänkt på det tidigare eftersom det skulle ha varit en härlig epitet för att hänga rundturen. Det är den stora finalen i kväll. Vi har haft en riktigt bra tid att turnera med kolleger rock bastards The Hip Replacements, Dave Davies och Jonathan Handley från Radio Råttor, äta god mat och möta så många trevliga människor. Herbie Parkin: en oerhörd ansträngning att sätta ihop allt och det uppskattas mer än du vet. Mycket kärlek från resten av Tuckers Lilla Kapell. EXTRA EXTRA - ingen tid att lägga på bloggen igår kväll så här är den sista posten. Spelningen på Tafelberg Tavern var det bästa vi har gjort i Sydafrika och det var inte en bar utan en konsertsal. Höften var bra, ljudet var bra och vi var bra. Dave Davies fick nästan hela publiken upp och dansa till ZX-Dan. Gånger. Det var en stor, svettig fest med massor av svordomar, drack, skrattade och dansade och det var svårt att komma undan. Men vi gjorde det i slutet. Phil & Lasse. Over and out.

Famous in South Africa!

Tough day driving from Wildernis yesterday, but we got safely to Cape Town, in the rain. 30 degrees in the shade all the way in the bus and crap weather when we arrived. Typical! h.   This morning we ran around putting up posters with Tammin Barker for the gig tomorrow at the Obz Café which we also visited to take a look at the stage. The Obz is actually like a small theatre, with their own lights and PA. When work was done we shot off to Boulder Bay to look at penguins for some unfathomable reason and got completely soaked in the process when the heavens opened up. We headed back along the coast and stopped off finally at the Cape Town Waterfront to do some much-needed shopping. Mostly souvenir stuff, but some of it was actually quite "lekker". A mall is a mall is a mall, in Cape Town,  Valbo or Brent Cross, what's the difference?   Backpackers, where we're staying (five mature men in a six-bed room) is a cool place to stay, with people of all ages (between 20 and 30) from all around the world. This evening we're dining on the seafood special at the Green Dolphin on the Waterfront. Surely a gastronomic delight. In addition: a jazz trio! Mark Fransman Trio. Only Åke Björänge knows who they are.   We are famous in South Africa! An article in Die Burger in Afrikaans about TLK, with a colour photo.   Tuff dag kör från Wildernis i går, men vi fick säkert till Kapstaden, i regnet. 30 grader i skuggan hela vägen i bussen och skit väder när vi kom. Typiskt! h.   Denna morgon har vi sprang runt sätta upp affischer med Tammin Barker för spelningen i morgon vid obz Café som vi också besökte att ta en titt på scenen. Den obz är faktiskt som en liten teater, med sina egna ljus och PA. När arbetet var utfört vi sköt iväg till Boulder Bay för att titta på pingviner av någon outgrundlig anledning och fick dränkta helt i processen när himlen öppnade. Vi leds tillbaka längs kusten och stannade slutligen vid Kapstaden Waterfront att göra några välbehövliga shopping. Mestadels souvenir grejer, men en del av det var faktiskt ganska "lekker". Ett köpcentrum är ett köpcentrum är ett köpcentrum, i Kapstaden, Valbo eller Brent Cross, vad är skillnaden?   Backpackers, där vi bor (fem äldre män i en sex-bäddsrum) är ett coolt ställe att bo med människor i alla åldrar (mellan 20 och 30) från hela världen. I kväll är vi middag på skaldjur speciell på Green Dolphin vid vattnet. Säkerligen en gastronomisk njutning. Dessutom: en jazztrio! Mark Fransman Trio. Braai braai Nieu Bethesda

On Monday morning we flew from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth, and then drove 450 km northwards for the next gig at Jonathan Handley's wonderful Bat Barn venue in Nieu Bethesda. It turned out amazingly and apparently more than 75% of the village had turned out to see us. We were advised to play only a few songs, but the audience wouldn't let us go, so it became a fairly long set. Everybody ate grilled meat (braai) in the break while Lasse changed a broken A-string. Nieu Bethesda is an artist's commune and almost everybody living there paints, sculpts or takes pictures and lives on that. We were promised an article in Country Life magazine by someone who took a lot of photos - nice if it happens. The age-span in the audience was 3 to 70+ and Björn generously gave the kids drumsticks to keep and play with.

 

We spent a total of 18 hours in Nieu Bethesda and left the following morning after a quick look-see of the village and a wander around Helen Martins' Owl House (Google it!). Lasse drove the 450 km back to the coast and we stayed in a nice little hotel in Wildernis. Herbie gave a telephone interview for the Cape Argus and there seems to be quite a buzz about us coming as two other Cape Town newspapers have also planned articles. There were lots of nice-looking restaurants in Wildernis, but we chose the one with a chef who couldn't handle more than 15 guests at a time and had to wait 90 minutes for food. But we got free drinks in compensation and when they asked if we wanted to order anything else, we answered "yeah, breakfast".

Åldern-spännvidd i publiken var 3 till 70 + och Björn generöst gav barnen trumpinnar att hålla och leka med.

 

Vi tillbringade sammanlagt 18 timmar i Nieu Bethesda och lämnade följande morgon efter en snabb titt-ser av byn och strosa runt Helen Martins "Owl House (Google it!). Lasse körde de 450 km tillbaka till kusten och vi bodde på ett trevligt litet hotell i Wildernis. Herbie gav en telefonintervju för Cape Argus och det verkar vara en ganska buzz om oss kommer som två andra Kapstaden tidningar har också planerat artiklar. Det fanns massor av snygg restauranger i Wildernis, men vi valde en med en kock som inte kunde hantera mer än 15 gäster åt gången och fick vänta 90 minuter för mat. Men vi fick gratis drinkar i ersättning och när de frågade om vi ville beställa något annat, vi svarade "Ja, breakfast".

 

Ytterligare 400 km till Kapstaden.

There wasn't much activity today apart from brunch at Mugg and Beans and more shopping in the Killarney Mall. Lennart bought a shirt for 30 rand (ca 27 SEK). Almost elegant. We spent the afternoon watching cricket at the St John's College, who won the game, thanks to fast-bowler Dean Maxton. All in TLK now understand perfectly the simple game of cricket.   Hey ho, let's go……to the Bellavista Lounge in danger-zone Bertram, Jo'burg! Four floors up and no elevator, but it was a really nice venue and the audience was terrific. We had to drink coffee in shifts because there were only three mugs… The Portuguese restaurant had a locked iron gate and a big guard on the door. Superb sea-food. The Hip Replacements played a great set, which went down very well. Famous South African singer Dave Davies guested with us and did a few Radio Rats hits which were also very popular with the audience. According to the Hips, TLK really cooked tonight!   There was a hilarious signing session after the gig where we signed everything people could get their hands on including posters, set-lists, drum-sticks and picks. We also got a bunch of CDs burned and sold some, which was nice. Today the flock of Tuckers will be spending the afternoon at Bertie's place having a braai, i. e. South African "grilla lite".   Phil & Lasse   Mer live!! Det var inte mycket aktivitet i dag förutom brunch på Mugg och bönor och mer shopping i Killarney Mall. Lennart köpte en tröja för 30 rand (ca 27 kronor). Nästan elegant. Vi tillbringade eftermiddagen tittar cricket vid St John's College, som vann spelet, tack vare snabbt Bowler Dean Maxton. Fyra våningar upp och ingen hiss, men det var en riktigt trevlig arena och publiken var fantastisk. Vi var tvungna att dricka kaffe i skift, eftersom det fanns bara tre muggar ... Det portugisiska restaurang hade en låst järngrind och en stor vakt på dörren. Superb sea-food. Hip Replacements spelade en stor uppsättning, som gick ned mycket bra. Berömd sydafrikansk sångare Dave Davies gästspelade med oss och gjorde några Radio Råttor träffar som också var mycket populär bland publiken. Enligt HD, TLK verkligen kokta i kväll! Det var en munter undertecknandet session efter spelningen där vi tecknat allt folk kunde lägga vantarna på bland annat affischer, set-listor, drum-pinnar och plockar. Vi fick också ett gäng brända cd-skivor och sålt en del, vilket var trevligt. Idag flock Tuckers kommer att tillbringa eftermiddagen på Bertie's plats med en braai, i. e. Live In South Africa

First off we played for the New Concept Mining workforce out in the south of Jo'burg. More than 100 workers were already crowded together on the factory floor when we arrived, so there was some panic to get ready and play. Phil Maxton introduced us and we played a short set of four songs acoustically. They probably couldn't hear anything, but we put on a bit of a show anyway.   After that, off to the Apartheid Museum, which was very interesting to see. There was so much of it that we didn't have time to look at everything. Kind of depressing……   Went to the Portuguese Fish Market and ate a good dinner there again, this time with the Maxtons. After that we played at Back2Basix with the Hip Replacements. Two sets, one short, after which the Hips played a fairly long set and we followed that with 15 songs or so. Got home about 1:00 am and sat in the kitchen dissecting the day, which was so full of different impressions. Great to finally get the first proper gig under our belts.     Först spelade vi för det nya konceptet Mining arbetskraft i södra Jo'burg. Fler än 100 anställda var trångt redan tillsammans på fabriksgolvet när vi kom, så det fanns en viss panik att få klar och spela. Phil Maxton presenterade oss och vi spelade en kort uppsättning med fyra låtar akustiskt. De antagligen kunde inte höra någonting, men vi sätter på lite av en show ändå.  Efter det, bort till Apartheid Museum, vilket var mycket intressant att se. Det var så mycket av det som vi inte hade tid att titta på allt. Typ av deprimerande ... ...  Gick till den portugisiska fiskmarknaden och åt en god middag där igen, denna gång med Maxtons. Efter att vi spelade på Back2Basix med Hip Replacements. Två set, ett kort, varefter Hips spelat en ganska lång upp och vi följde med 15 låtar eller så. Kom hem ca 1:00 och satt i köket dissekera den dagen, som var så full av olika intryck. Kul att äntligen få den första riktiga spelningen under svångremmen.       Phil

Here we are taking photos of each other, as pop stars usually do. And then Björn and Lasse totally shopped out, and then a photo of a camel, or giraffe, or something.....

Time's flying, and the sound of Africa is "mmmmm", because the food is so good.

Bakgatla, Pilanesberg

Grillkväll i Bakgatla Lodge. David grillar Boerewors, nån slags inhemsk korv med mycket intressant smak. Kvällen avslutas med lite "jam" i sann Tuckeranda. Spelandet avbröts dock av en granntant som "rather would listen to the Bush". Som dom gentlemän vi är så fortsatte musicerandet inomhus. 

 

 

Barbeque in Bakgatla Lodge. David grills Boerewors, some kind of domestic dog with a very interesting flavor. The evening ends with a little "jam" in the true spirit Tucker. Gambling, however, was interrupted by a neighbor lady who "would rather listen to the Bush". As the Court gentlemen, we are so continued musicianship indoors.

Arrived In One Piece

Thomas Hammarberg drove us safely to Arlanda for the flight out. That was quick and easy. It was a long trip to Johannesburg from Stockholm via Istanbul, but fairly comfortable and there were no hassles at all. On arrival in Jo'burg we were picked up by Irene Maxton and driven to her house in a beautiful area close to the centre of Jo'burg. Phil and Irene Maxton made us welcome, offered us a braai (grilled meat) and plenty to drink and we gave them a short unplugged concert towards the end of the evening before we retired, exhausted, at around 22:00 for a good night's sleep. Phil and Lennart successfully disturbed each other by both snoring and the guard dogs in the area created woke everybody with a terrible racket at about 2 in the morning. Otherwise no problems.

 

We continue to Pilanesberg Game Reserve this morning via a local Shopping Mall to get some food and stuff before a safari and watching animals do like they do on the Discovery Channel.

 

Thomas Hammarberg körde oss säkert till Arlanda för flygningen. Det var snabbt och lätt. Det var en lång resa till Johannesburg från Stockholm via Istanbul, men ganska bekväm och det fanns inga bekymmer alls. Vid ankomsten till Jo'burg plockades vi upp av Irene Maxton och kördes till hennes hus i ett naturskönt område nära centrum Jo'burg. Phil och Irene Maxton gjort oss välkomna, bjöd oss braai (grillat kött) och mycket att dricka och vi gav dem en kort unplugged konsert i slutet av kvällen innan vi gick i pension, utmattad, ca 22.00 för en god natts sömn . Phil och Lennart störd framgångsrikt varandra både snarkningar och vakthundar i den skapade området vaknade alla med ett fruktansvärt oväsen på ca 2 på morgonen. Annars inga problem.

Vi fortsätter till Pilanesberg Game Reserve nu på morgen via lokala köpcentret för att få lite mat och grejer innan en safari och titta på djur gör som de gör på Discovery Channel.
